The first anniversary of the death of master conductor Mariss Jansons. Included are all former EMI recordings with the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra, which established an international reputation as one of the world's leading orchestras, as well as five DVDs of live footage from the Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation's treasured collection! Mariss Jansons was born in Riga, Latvia in 1943, the son of conductor Arvid Jansons. He studied violin, piano, and conducting at the Leningrad Conservatory, graduating with honors. In 1971, he received the Herbert von Karajan Foundation Conducting Award, and in the same year was appointed by Evgeny Mravinsky as his assistant in the Leningrad Philharmonic Orchestra. In 1986, he conducted the entire tour of the Leningrad Philharmonic in Japan, replacing Yevgeny Mravinsky, who had cancelled his visit to Japan, and left a great impression on Japanese audiences. From 1979 to 2002, he served as Principal Conductor of the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra, and from 1992 to 1997 he was Principal Guest Conductor of the London Philharmonic Orchestra. He also served as Principal Guest Conductor of the London Philharmonic Orchestra (1992-1997) and Music Director of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra (1997-2004).And while serving as Principal Conductor of the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra since 2003, he was also Principal Conductor of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra in Amsterdam from 2004-2015. Mariss Jansons has received numerous awards and is an honorary member of the Musikverein in Vienna and the Royal Academy of Music in London; in May 2004, the Royal Philharmonic Society in London named Jansons "Conductor of the Year.
