Description:
Glenn Gould's most improvisational Goldberg, which wowed Salzburg audiences. Salzburg Festival, the most prestigious of the summer European music festivals. Gould appeared at this festival only twice, in 1958 and 1959. The solo recital on August 25, 1959, in the Mozarteum auditorium was a parade of Gould's best pieces, with a repertoire that covered everything from Sverling to Schoenberg. The Goldberg Variations, featured in the second half of the recital, was the fastest tempo of all Gould's performances of the same piece, and his interpretation of the piece was free and improvisational in the air in front of the audience. This is a truly valuable record of Gould playing this piece in an actual concert. This is the first LP reissue from the master recorded by the Austrian Broadcasting Corporation. (C)RS
