Shostakovich, Dmitri (1906-1975)
Description:
Included are two pieces that are important to Lis, Shostakovich's Symphony No. 10 and Viktorova's "Blue Dragon of the East"! The Philharmonic Orchestra of Southern Netherland, formed in 2013 from the merger of the Limburg Symphony Orchestra and the Brabant Orchestra, presents its second album with Dmitri Liss, the orchestra's first principal conductor since the 2016-17 season. It features Shostakovich's Symphony No. 10 and "The Blue Dragon of the East" by Liss' partner Olga Viktorova. The "Qinglong" is an energetic work that was premiered in 2015 by the Ural Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Liss. Shostakovich's Symphony No. 10, composed and premiered shortly after Stalin's death in 1953, is said to represent his liberation from the purges. For Liss, whose heart goes out to Shostakovich, who lived in a time when it was difficult for composers to compose freely, this work has a special meaning, and here, too, he draws on every detail with deep empathy, while powerfully singing the DSCH motive, which is said to represent Shostakovich himself, in the last movement.
