Welcome to the Introduction to Logistics course. This program will equip you with the essential concepts, structures, and operational principles required to understand how logistics supports modern organisations and global supply chains. You will explore how materials move, how logistics activities are organised, the value logistics creates, and the strategic impact logistics has on financial performance, organisational integration, and customer satisfaction. This course also examines the pressures, trends, and cooperative relationships that shape today’s logistics environment.
This course begins by examining what logistics is and what supporting operations include across procurement, production, distribution, and customer service. You will explore the spectrum of products handled in logistics, from raw materials to finished goods, and how organisations manage the movement of materials through inbound and outbound logistics. This section also examines the cycle of supply and chain, the role and structure of the supply chain, and the benefits supply chains provide in terms of efficiency, responsiveness, and cost reduction. You will explore how intermediaries can be used to simplify the supply chain by consolidating activities, reducing complexity, and enabling smoother flows of goods and information.
The next learning area focuses on logistics activities and organisation. You will explore the major activities included in logistics—such as transportation, warehousing, inventory management, materials handling, packaging, and order fulfilment—and how logistics functions are structured within organisations. This section explains the role and aims of logistics, the importance of logistics in achieving organisational objectives, and the significant impact logistics has on financial performance. You will examine how logistics influences return on assets (ROA), how progress in logistics has improved efficiency over time, the pressures organisations face to enhance their logistics performance, and the current trends shaping logistics—including digitalisation, automation, sustainability, and real-time data visibility.
A further part of the program explores logistics integration, both internally and externally. You will examine why fragmented logistics functions create inefficiencies, the disadvantages of splitting logistics into separate departments, and the factors that encourage internal integration. This section explains the concept of total logistics cost analysis, the stages in achieving internal integration, and the importance of integration along the supply chain. You will explore the problems caused by fragmented supply chains, the benefits of external integration, and the three levels of logistics integration—internal, functional, and external. You will also examine how to achieve logistics integration through aligned processes, shared information systems, performance measures, and cross-functional collaboration.
The final learning area focuses on co-operative relationships and strategic structures within supply chains. You will explore the different types of cooperation between organisations, the features of strategic alliances, and the spectrum of relationships ranging from transactional to fully integrated partnerships. This section also examines vertical integration, including its different levels, and how organisations determine the degree to which they should control upstream or downstream activities to optimise performance, reduce risk, and enhance competitive advantage.
By the end of this course you will be able to understand fundamental logistics concepts, recognise the role of logistics within supply chains, analyse logistics costs, identify integration opportunities, evaluate strategic relationships, and appreciate how logistics contributes to organisational efficiency, financial performance, and long-term competitiveness.
By the end of this course, you will be able to understand:
