Designed to let you experiment with a completely different extraction style without changing your machine or group head, this stepped-down basket replaces your standard 58mm basket with a deeper 49mm format for greater control and flexibility.

The tapered interior promotes a gentler, more forgiving flow profile that is especially friendly to lighter roasts and less-than-perfect puck prep. Precision laser-perforated holes ensure consistent water distribution, helping you achieve cleaner, more even extractions shot after shot.

This basket is deeper than typical 58mm baskets and is compatible with bottomless (naked) portafilters only. To make dialing in simple and frustration-free, Normcore includes the essential accessories required for a complete 49mm workflow right out of the box.

Flow Options Explained

Reduced Flow (Low-Flow) – 0.18mm hole diameter, 2475 holes
This option allows a coarser grind, is easier to dial in, and produces a thicker, heavier texture. It is well suited for medium to dark roasts, alternative extraction styles, and experimentation.

Standard Flow (High-Flow) – 0.28mm hole diameter, 786 holes
This option requires a finer grind and flows faster, delivering higher clarity and definition. It is ideal for general use, light roasts, and standard espresso techniques.

Practical tip: when switching from 0.18mm to 0.28mm, adjust your grind finer (typically 1–2 clicks). When moving from 0.28mm to 0.18mm, adjust coarser and monitor pressure and flow while fine-tuning your dose.

In simple terms, more holes do not mean faster flow. Smaller holes (0.18mm) create more resistance and slower, steadier shots, even though there are more of them. Larger holes (0.28mm) allow water to pass more easily, resulting in faster flow and higher clarity.

Compatibility Notes

• Bottomless portafilter only; not compatible with spouted or pressurised portafilters
• Check headspace when using a puck screen or spring; reduce dose if clearance is tight
• Rinse the puck screen and spring after use and dry the basket thoroughly
• Tamper requirement: use a 49mm tamper only
• 49.7mm or 58mm tampers will not fit
• If using a Normcore 58.5mm spring-loaded tamper, a 49mm base and baffle are required (sold separately)
