This is COSRX's strongest retinol at the time of publication: 0.5% retinol suspended in an oil-based carrier system. The oil format is a deliberate choice, not a compromise. Oil-based retinol penetrates more slowly and with less irritation than water or serum-based formulas, which makes 0.5% retinol tolerable where a 0.3% serum might cause flaking. For dry, mature, or reactive skin that wants real retinol results without the standard "retinol uglies" phase, this is the better entry.
Retinol at 0.5% is considered an intermediate clinical strength. Below that (0.1 to 0.25%) is beginner territory. Above that (0.75 to 1%) is advanced. COSRX's oil delivery puts the 0.5% into a range that feels more like a prescribed treatment than an over-the-counter test. Results: visible fine line softening and improved texture within 8 to 12 weeks of nightly use. This is a serious retinol for serious users.
Retinol converts on skin to retinoic acid, which binds nuclear receptors to upregulate collagen production, accelerate cell turnover, and normalize pigmentation. The oil base slows absorption compared to a water serum, reducing irritation while maintaining efficacy. Jojoba oil (typical oil base for retinol) has a structure similar to human sebum, which helps penetration without breakouts. Over 8 to 12 weeks: smoother texture, softer fine lines, brighter tone.
PM only. After cleansing and toner, dispense 2 to 3 drops, warm between fingers, press into face. Avoid eye area and corners of the mouth. Wait 10 to 15 minutes, then follow with moisturizer. Start 2 to 3 nights per week for 2 weeks, work up to 4 to 5 nights. Always use SPF in the morning. Do not combine with AHA, BHA, or vitamin C on the same evening.
Yes for most. Start with 0.1 to 0.3% retinol for 8 to 12 weeks first, then graduate. Jumping straight to 0.5% usually causes 2 to 3 weeks of flaking, redness, and irritation that discourages people from continuing retinol altogether.
Milder than serum-based 0.5% retinols. The oil slows penetration, so irritation builds slower. Users still report 1 to 2 weeks of dryness when starting. Back off frequency if skin gets red or peels.
Avoid AHA, BHA, and vitamin C on the same night. Use retinol PM, vitamin C AM. Niacinamide is safe to pair. Hyaluronic acid and peptides are safe. Avoid strong exfoliating toners for 2 to 4 weeks after starting retinol.
Texture improvement: 4 to 6 weeks. Fine line softening: 8 to 12 weeks. Deep wrinkle improvement: 4 to 6 months. Hyperpigmentation: 8 to 16 weeks. Consistency matters more than dosage.
3 to 4 months with nightly use (2 to 3 drops). The small dropper bottle is intentional; retinol degrades over time, so a smaller fresher supply is preferable.
