Description:
St. Mark's Basilica in Venice, one of the centers of Italian Baroque music, is known for the many prominent musicians who served as music directors and organists from the 16th to 18th centuries. Monteverdi was one of them, and as soon as he was appointed as music director in 1613, he was praised for his efforts to rebuild the chorus and instrumental groups that had lost their strength for various reasons. It is said that Monteverdi wrote this work with the balcony facing St. Mark's Basilica in mind, and its dramatic and flamboyant style impressed the audience of the time. The "Mass for Four Voices Unaccompanied," published after Monteverdi's death, is a magnificent work written for voices only, and like the "Gloria," it reveals Monteverdi's advanced compositional techniques. The "Lamentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary," a reworking of the famous "Lamentation of Arianna" into a religious piece, is also worth listening to. The ensemble "Odekaton" specializes in vocal music from the Renaissance to the Baroque period. Naxos Japan
