The key words are Poland and France. The Piano Concertos of Aleksandr Tansman (1897-1986) and Grażyna Bacewicz (1909-1969), two of the greatest composers Poland produced in the 20th century, are coupled on this Polish label. This is a good project that can only be done on the Polish label. Tansman's "Piano Concerto No. 1," composed in 1925, is an excellent work in the neoclassical style with a hint of French harmony. Grażyna Bacewicz was the first Polish female composer to achieve international fame. The "Piano Concerto" was composed in 1949, shortly before the internationally acclaimed "Piano Sonata No. 2" of 1953, and is one of her best-known works, demonstrating the compositional techniques directly inherited from Nadia Boulanger. The soloist, Julia Kochuban, is a talented Polish student who studied at the Chopin University of Music in Warsaw and at the Mozarteum in Salzburg under Piotr Paleczny and Pavel Girilov. She is a pianist with a reputation for discovering and interpreting Batszewicz's works, including founding and serving as director of the Batszewicz International Summer Academy. Tokyo M-Plus
