The Vienna Philharmonic's New Year's Concert of Waltzes and Polkas Every year on January 1, the Vienna Philharmonic performs its New Year's Concert. The New Year's Concert is one of the most famous classical music events in the world, and is broadcast from Vienna's golden Musikvereinsaal to more than 90 countries around the world via TV and radio, reaching 400 million viewers. In 2018, master musician Riccardo Muti, who has been Music Director of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra since 2010 after stints with the Philadelphia Orchestra and La Scala in Milan, will perform the Strauss family's waltzes and polkas for the fifth time in 14 years (1993, 1997, 2000, 2004). This will be his fifth appearance at the podium in 14 years, following appearances in 1993, 1997, 2000, and 2004. Muti has conducted the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra more than 500 times and is currently the most closely associated with the orchestra.
