Description:

The symphonies of Thomas Wilson, the founder of the Scottish revival of art music, was born in the U.S. in 1927 to English parents, who soon brought him to England to live in Glasgow and study music. He completed five symphonies during his lifetime, and both No. 3 and No. 4 here were premiered by the Royal Scottish National Orchestra. The style of the symphonies is very easy to listen to despite the use of modern techniques such as chromatic scales, dissonances, and strong accents, while at the same time maintaining a high level of artistry without being overbearingly conventional. Symphony No. 4 commemorates the 500th anniversary of the city of Paisley in England, famous for its "paisley pattern" fabric. Passerres is the 12th century name for this area. Symphony No. 3 is a masterpiece that was described by The Guardian (UK) as "the most moving work written by a Scottish composer in recent years.Carillon" was written to celebrate the completion of the Royal Concert Hall, where this album was recorded, and is based on the four notes G-A-S(E flat)-G, which represent the city of Glasgow. MacDonald and the Royal Scottish National Orchestra have a deep sympathy and understanding for the work of Wilson, even called the "father of Scottish music," and they more than adequately express its appeal.
