Masterful Chris Potter and the uniquely orchestrated Frankfurt Radio Big Band perform a piece full of experimental spirit inspired by Stravinsky's "The Rite of Spring" Stravinsky's "The Rite of Spring" is known as one of the most famous classical works of the 20th century. As a tribute to this work, the Frankfurt Radio Big Band and American tenor saxophonist Chris Potter performed this piece together. Originally, "Rituals" was newly composed as a tribute to "The Rite of Spring" for performance at the Stravinsky Festival. The performance was such a success that Chris Potter and the Frankfurt Radio Big Band decided to record it in its entirety once again in the studio. McNeely's compositions are in the spirit of Stravinsky.While the complex rhythms and harmonious score were clearly inspired by the sound language of the Rite of Spring, McNeely expanded the standard big band lineup to include French horn, harp, and percussion, and added a movement called "Rebirth," which does not exist in the original work. The six-part "Rituals" is followed by four pieces from the Potter catalog that McNeely rearranged for large orchestra. Dawn" and "Wine Dark Sea" are from the album "The Sirens" (ECM 2013), "The Wheel" from "Underground" (Sunnyside 2006), and "Okinawa" from the live album "This Will Be" (Storyville 2001). Big band musicians such as Steffen Weber, Tony Lakatos, Heinz-Dieter Sauerborn, and Axel Schlosser also give exceptional performances as soloists.The Frankfurt Radio Big Band has many strengths that ordinary big bands do not have, such as the ability to provide a lot of doubling in the saxophone set and having a woodwind player. In terms of the variety of sound that Jim McNeely required, this was a perfect collaboration.
