Beethoven's "Music for the Theater" by Markus Bosch and Capella Aquileira. The previous album featured the rarely performed "The Ruins of Athens" and the cantata "The Silent Sea and the Pleasant Voyage," and this time they tackle the even rarer "King Stefan," composed in 1811. Like "The Ruins of Athens," "King Stefan" was written in 1811 for the opening of the "German Theater" built by Emperor Franz I of Austria in Hungary. The main character is István I, who founded the Kingdom of Hungary in 1000 A.D. The subtitle reads "Hungary's First Good Ruler. The text is by August von Kotzebue, as in "The Ruins of Athens," but in this album, as in the previous one, Kai Wessler has reworked it to make it relevant to the 21st century by replacing it with modern language.
