Description:
The New York City Ballet, based in Manhattan, New York, has its roots in the "American Ballet School" founded in 1933. During the war, the company was on the verge of dissolution several times, but in 1946 it was reestablished as the Ballet Society, and in 1948 it contracted with the New York City Center to become the exclusive ballet company, which it is today under its present name. After Balanchine's illness, the company was taken over by Peter Martins, the current artistic director (2017), who has been preserving the tradition by reviving Balanchine's works, as well as presenting new works and exploring the future of the ballet company. This video includes four works with music by Gounod, Ravel, and Bizet, three French composers who greatly influenced Balanchine. All of these works, choreographed between 1925 and 1980, have a neo-classical feel and breathtaking technique. They are danced, of course, by some of the world's finest dancers. The wonderful camerawork of video director Vincent Batillon is also noteworthy. Naxos Japan
