D'Alay, Mauro (c.1687-1757)
Description:
Mauro Dallai, a violinist and composer from Parma, whose career is little known except that he served in the cathedral of Santa Maria della Steccata from 1712 to 1726 and from 1730 to 1739. He is said to have acquired considerable wealth and fame as the favorite of Elisabetta Farnese, who became Queen of Spain after serving at the court of King Felipe V. He treasured the 1718 Stradivarius gifted to him by King Felipe V for the rest of his life, and left several works, mainly violin pieces, but also sonatas and cantatas. The score of the concerto on this album is called the "Dresden Concerto" because it is housed in the Saxon National Library in Dresden, and while it is modeled on Vivaldi's works, the style is more free and modern, sometimes even incorporating the Gallant style. The "Anna Maria" to whom the work is dedicated is Anna Maria della Pietà, a pupil of Vivaldi who was a virtuoso player in Venice at the time. As in the previous work, Violin Concertos Nos. 1-12 (CDS-7892), the ensemble "Reale Concerto," led by Daniele Fanfoni and Luca Fanfoni, performs the work. Naxos Japan
