This album was performed and recorded in 1981 at the Bach Festival on the Atlantic resort island of Madeira. It was performed by Julius Baker, who was a solo flutist with the New York Philharmonic at the time. Baker was born in Cleveland, Ohio. He began his career with the local Cleveland Orchestra, and after playing with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, he became principal flutist of the New York Philharmonic. This recording was made three years before Baker retired from the orchestra, and features his free and vigorous playing, including Bach's famous "Sarabande.
