Hardcover cloth photo album, approx. 9.5 x 7.5 inches. 70 photographs on 13 leaves of heavy card stock in different pink and yellow tones. Leaves are fragile with occasional shallow chipping to the edges, abrasion to front pastedown, overall Very Good with only a few empty spaces calling for photographs. Photographs on the first 13 pages are mounted, with the remainder inserted into the cut slips. Handmade cross-stitch cover design, likely from a pattern published in a journal--not mass produced, but other examples (with variations like filling in the tail) have been seen in the past.
An interesting interior of a dentist office, various living rooms and a wild photograph of the family in costume on July 4, 1900 are highlights (alongside the endearing portraiture and Boston views). Many snapshots of the various animals and a beloved subject named Henry posing with them. Henry and Diamond (horse); "back from hunting" (holding a rifle), Saco (also a horse). Named locations include Boston, Framingham, Jamaica Plain, Newton, Hunnewell Mansion, Augusta Maine (including Lithgrow Library, Kennebec Court House and the State House), and Lake Cobbosseecontee.
The photographs are captioned, but despite a handful of names, the compiler's identity is unknown. We believe her to be a woman around 20, possibly a student at Mount Holyoke. Individuals include Henry Beckwith, Katie Farrington, Mabel Foster, Hattie Wise, Constance Turner, Marion Soule, Anna Soule (possibly the educator, but the photo is too light to be sure), George Farrington (a.k.a. "Hat Man"),"Uncle Marshall" and "Grannie Davenport."
