Description:
This album celebrates the 95th anniversary of composer Samuel Adler, who will celebrate his 95th birthday on March 4, 2023. Adler was born in 1928 to a Jewish musical family in Mannheim, Germany, and fled to the United States in 1939. He studied composition with Copland, Hindemith, and Piston, and conducting with Koussevitzky. After the war, he joined the U.S. Army stationed in Germany and founded the Seventh Army Symphony Orchestra, which he conducted himself, and later taught composition at the Eastman School of Music and the Juilliard School. Adler's works have been performed by major American orchestras such as the New York Philharmonic, Chicago Symphony, and Cleveland Orchestra, as well as by the Berlin Philharmonic and other German orchestras. Many of the works on this album were written after he was over 90 years old, and all of them combine the neoclassical sensibility of his teachers Copland and Hindemith with the novelty of 21st century music and his insatiable passion for music.Performers include Laura Melton, an avid introducer of Adler's works, singer Zabine Goetz, who has collaborated with Adler on various Jewish projects, and Noah Bendix-Bargulis, first concertmaster of the Berlin Philharmonic.
