Olivier Messiaen, who celebrated the 110th anniversary of his birth in 2018, is one of the greatest composers of the 20th century. His masterpiece, the Turangalila Symphony, is one of the greatest works of all the 20th century has produced. It was the premiere in 1949, performed by the Boston Symphony Orchestra and conducted by Leonard Bernstein, Yutaka Sado's mentor, that can be said to have determined its reputation. Sado took up the piece at a subscription performance of the Tonkünstler Orchestra at the Musikverein in 2017, and his performance, full of fervor and color, was met with rapturous applause.
