Our Insulated HDO Hive Toppers are the best way to convert your 10 frame hive to a condensing hive for the winter and keep your bees happy and healthy. Bees do not need ventilation in the winter, they need insulation under the lid to hold in heat and stop moisture from condensing on the underside of the lid. We start with a 3 5/8" tall HDO rim with 3/8" plywood glued in a dado in the middle.  Above the plywood is a 1.5" thick sheet of XPS foam insulation board and below the plywood is a piece of 5mm closed cell foam radiant barrier, not cheap double bubble. Below the radiant barrier is a void about 1.5" tall that allows room for feeding whether dry sugar, fondant, patties or baggies. The 1.5" XPS foam insulation board is R-7.5 and the closed cell foam radiant barrier is R-15 for a total of R-22.5. HDO is already a very strong and durable material and with the 3/8” plywood glued in the middle these Hive Toppers are stout and will last you for many seasons!
