The WDR Symphony Orchestra Cologne, one of the most prestigious orchestras in Japan, has attracted much attention in Japan because Japanese violinist Naoko Ogihara serves as concert mistress. The WDR Cologne Symphony Orchestra will perform a new orchestral work by Melbourne-based composer Riza Lim, "The Triple Altarpiece of the Annunciation," together with young maestro Christian Macerlal, who has extended his term as chief conductor until 2025. Riza Lim, born in Perth, Australia in 1966, is one of the most sought-after female composers in contemporary music. Her works have been commissioned by world-class orchestras and ensembles such as the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, and the Ensemble Intercontemporain, and she has appeared at major music festivals around the world, winning many awards. The Triple Altarpiece of the Annunciation", a work about three women: Sappho, the ancient Greek poet, the Virgin Mary, and Fatima, daughter of Muhammad, was co-commissioned by the WDR Symphony Orchestra Cologne, the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, and the Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks.The premiere was given by the same artist as this disc, and the recording was made at the Cologne Philharmonic shortly after the premiere.
