Art Blakey's 100th anniversary. Art Blakey celebrates the 100th anniversary of his birth in October 2019. The Jazz Messengers, his famous band, was officially recorded on March 8, 1959 at Van Gelder Studios in New Jersey, produced by Alfred Lion, founder of Blue Note Records, and recorded in a completely unreleased studio, Although the session is listed in the discography, it has never been released to the public for more than half a century. It was recorded only four months after "Mornin" (October 30, 1958), one of Blakey's lifetime masterpieces and one of the best hard bop records of all time, with the temporary return of Hank Mobley, the band's first member, on tenor saxophone. This is the only official studio recording of this lineup. The recording includes four songs from "At the Jazz Corner of the World Vol. 1 & 2" (April 15, 1959), recorded live at Birdland five weeks after the recording of this album, plus two completely unreleased songs.With Morgan and Mobley as the front line, the band is a direct representation of the excitement of the golden age of modern jazz, and is a must-see for all jazz fans.
