The "tenor battle" teams, in which two tenor saxophonists compete in a hotly contested battle of personalities, have been very popular since the bebop era and into the modern jazz era. Teams such as Dexter Gordon-Wardell Gray, Sonny Stitt-Gene Ammons, and Al Cohn-Zoot Sims, as well as many big bands, featured two contrasting tenor players in their solo battles. Perhaps the wildest and most dynamic of these teams was Johnny Griffin and Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis. For several years in the early 1960s, they had a regular group called the "Tough Tenors," and they left several masterpieces in the prestigious Prestige and Riverside-affiliated Jazzland, as well as playing together in the Kenny Clarke-Francie Bolan Big Band. They also played together in the Kenny Clarke-Francy Bolan Big Band, and enjoyed many revivals from the 70's to the mid-80's.This is an album of a reunion session at Onkel Po's Carnegie Hall in Hamburg on August 8, 1975, with Tete Montreux, Niels Henning Olsted Piedersen (Niels Pedersen), and Art Taylor, a powerful rhythm section that they had never played together before. The album features the two playing together for the first time, backed by a strong rhythm section. With the exception of "Sophisticated Lady" and "In Walked Bud," there are no other recordings of the two together. The two ballad performances, "Sophisticated Lady" featuring Griffin and "I Can't Get Started" showcasing Lockjaw, are also superb!
