Violeta Parra
Description:
Violleta Parra (1917-67), a female folklore singer from Chile in South America, was a pioneer of the Nueva Cancion (New Song) movement, which aimed for social change. She traveled around Chile to discover unknown folk songs and sought a direction toward a return to tradition, but in 1967 she committed suicide with a pistol and passed away at the young age of 49. This album is a compilation of the best of her works, mainly from the albums she recorded in her later years in 1966, and includes all of her famous and representative songs, such as "My Life, Thank You," "If I Could Be 17 Years Old Again," and "Tenshi no Rin. Accompaniment is mainly guitar and charango (small Andean guitar) by Violator herself, with occasional primitive percussion and fiddle featured. In addition, the Uruguayan male singer Alberto Sapican participates in duets on several songs. This is a valuable recording of an important South American folklore singer. Japanese commentary is not enclosed.
