Asaarashi Yugake

The Asaarashi yugake is distinguished by its unique craftsmanship, as well as by external features such as the orientation and shape of the hat (tsunomaki), the straight string pad (tsurumakura / string groove), and the flexibility of the hikae (palm support).

The hat is designed not to tilt downward but instead to face toward the middle finger. Any difficulty this creates in hooking the string is offset by the hat’s shape and the flexibility of the waist. This design makes it easier to grip the string while still supporting the proper twisting action of the shooting hand. Moreover, because of this orientation, even if the twist is applied excessively, the string is less likely to strike the tip of the hat upon release, reducing interference during the shot. For this reason, Asaarashi is particularly well-suited for archers who emphasize precise control of the twist in their shooting method.

The string pad (string groove) is set straight in relation to the hat. This not only helps achieve smooth twisting but also provides the significant advantage of keeping the hat’s alignment stable even under strong twisting. Its placement is neither too deep nor too shallow, allowing for an easy string grip and producing a sharp, clean release.

The hikae is crafted with flexibility, ensuring it fits comfortably in the hand and offers excellent maneuverability. As a result, even new yugake users can adapt quickly. For beginners learning kyudo, this design also greatly reduces common problems in shooting—such as incorrect string grip, arrow slippage, or empty releases—making Asaarashi an ideal first yugake.
