Description:

The Grateful Dead recently re-released "EUROPE '72," a live recording of their 1972 European tour, to commemorate their 50th anniversary. The opening act for their final London show was the New Riders of the Purple Sage (NRPS), of which Jerry Garcia was a founding member. This is a rare and previously unreleased live recording of the NRPS in their heyday at the Lyceum Ballroom in London, where Garcia and other Dead members also participated! The liner notes by Sam Cutler, manager of both bands at the time, and rare photos are included. New Riders of the Purple Sage was a country rock band that emerged from the San Francisco music scene in the late 60s. The band was formed in 1969 by Jerry Garcia (Pe.SG), John Dawson (G&Vo), and David Nelson (G&Vo) of the Grateful Dead, who had known each other since their college days.Mickey Hart (dr.) and Phil Lesh (b.) of the Dead were initially members of the band, but were replaced by Dave Tolbert (b.) and Spencer Dryden (dr.), who made their debut with "New Riders of the Purple Sage" in 1971. The album was a Billboard charting hit. The band released their second album, "Powerglide," in 1972, and despite repeated member changes throughout the 70s and 80s, consistently released albums and toured, gaining solid popularity. However, in 1997, Dawson broke up the band and announced his retirement, and in 2005, the other members reunited to tour and release several albums.
