Suk (1874-1935)
Description:
Josef Suk, the renowned violinist of the Suk Trio. In 1904, his beloved father-in-law, Dvořák, passed away, and the following year his beloved wife Ottilje also died. However, Suk overcame his grief and completed the symphony "Asrael" (named after the angel who presides over death) in 1906, a profound work that shows the influence of Dvořák and Brahms, but with a more original style. The first three movements are a series of lamentations, but the beautiful Adagio in the fourth movement is a memorial to his beloved wife Ottilje, and the final movement offers a glimmer of hope. This is a sympathetic performance by Netopil, who specializes in modern Czech works. Naxos Japan
