Both Elgar and Dilius, who wrote their string quartets at the same time, have a profound and sorrowful expression that is strongly influenced by World War I. Dilius, who lived in a village just south of Paris at the outbreak of the war, was terribly distressed by the sight of wounded soldiers and numerous refugees. For this recording, Gremlly has supplemented them and made them playable, allowing the listener to compare the differences between the two manuscripts.Around the same time, Elgar, whose health had also been damaged by the war, moved to the suburbs at the urging of his wife Alice, and regained his creative impetus, writing several major works, including this string quartet.
