Kenny Barron Quintet
Description:
Kenny Barron's first new album in two years, since his 2016 trio release "The Book of Intuition," is his first quintet release in a while. The two members of the rhythm section, Kiyoshi Kitagawa (b) and Johnathan Blake (ds), who were together on the previous album, have been retained, and tenor/soprano saxophonist Dayna Stephens and trumpeter Mike Rodriguez have joined the quintet. I wanted to make a quintet because I can write more," Baron said. True to his word, the album contains many originals that have never been recorded before." DPW" is an up-tempo hard bop that Baron wrote in 2013 as a tribute to his neighborhood, Ditmas Park West in Brooklyn. This is a perfect opening track that reminds one of the Jazz Messengers and Miles' quintet of the 1960s! Other originals include the waltz-like title track "Concentric Circles," the beautiful "Blue Waters," with Blake's 6/8 rhythm, and the ballad "A Short Journey," as well as a version by Gal Costa, which Baron discovered, and which is filled with his love for Brazilian music. The album also includes "Aquele Frevo Axe," co-written by Caetano Veloso and Cezar Mendes, a song Barron wrote for the 2009 film "Another Harvest Moon," "In the Dark," and "Baile," full of love for Latin rhythms, as well as the Lenny White original "Blue Waters," and the ballad "A Short Journey. Lenny White's original "L's Bop" and a solo Monk at the end.
