Description:

This collection of J.S. Bach works is performed by Robert Smith, winner of the 2012 Bach-Abel International Viola da Gamba Competition and currently based in Amsterdam, where he is active as both soloist and ensemble. The three sonatas, written for F.C. Ardell, viola da gamba virtuoso of the Köthen Court Orchestra, are masterpieces in trio sonata form with harpsichord obbligato. Robert Smith attempts to bridge the 18th century and the present by combining a sonata by Christoph Schaffrath, harpsichordist in the orchestra of King Friedrich the Great of Prussia, and his own composition "The Agony of Daido," which he says was influenced by the heavy metal band "Metallica. The concert will be performed by Francesco Corti, an Italian virtuoso who won first prize in the harpsichord section of the 15th International Johann Sebastian Bach Competition in Leipzig in 2006. He is highly acclaimed for his harpsichord concerto by J.S. Bach, which he performed with Il Pomo d'Oro. Naxos Japan
