The organ in the chapel of the Palace of Versailles is one of the most remarkable of the many artistic legacies of this historic building, which was used by the French royal family for religious ceremonies during the old regime. The instrument, which had been furnished by Robert Clicquot and his family, was restored to its original French classical form in 1994-95, after having been remodeled in the Romantic style since the 19th century by famous modern architects such as Cavaillé-Coll and Gonzalez. The Romantic-style organ has a certain historical significance, and in France, where many instruments remain in that state, it is extremely valuable to be able to hear the sound of the instrument that Clicquot created for the royal family. The recent restoration of the instruments in the Royal Chapel of Versailles has restored the sound that people heard 300 years ago, and the virtuoso Ton Koopman, who already has the appearance of a master, has selected French music from the Baroque period to be performed on this album. The tuning was done by Tadasu Sekiguchi, who also tuned the historic organ of Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris shortly before it was destroyed by fire.Enjoy the works of François Couperin, who gave the inaugural performance of this instrument in 1710, as well as two suites by Clérambault and rare pieces by Louis Couperin, all freshly revived French music interpreted with the vigor and finesse of the experienced "modern Copeman".
