Description:

Stravinsky's "The Nightingale," a short opera of about 45 minutes based on Andersen's fairy tale, was influenced by the chinoiserie (Chinese taste) that was popular at the end of the 19th century. However, there is a six-year gap between the first part, begun in 1908, and the second and third parts, completed in 1914, and it is interesting to see the difference in Stravinsky's style. Despite the large size of the orchestra, the sound is as delicate as chamber music, and the singers' parts are skillfully written. Ertmann's singing of the nightingale warbler is smooth and clear, even the high notes are clear and easy, just like the birdsong itself. The song cycle "Pribautki" and "Lieder on Verses of Verlaine" are small pieces with a colorful, almost Debussy-like sound. Both prove Stravinsky's talent as a song composer. Naxos Japan
