Dominik Wania
Description:
ECM solo debut of Polish pianist Dominik Wania, also a member of the Maciej Obara Quartet (Unloved, Three Crowns). The pianist's sensitivity to touch, tone, and texture derives from his classical music background, but he also possesses the instincts of a great improviser, a remarkable pianist with a keen focus on the details of the music as it unfolds in the moment and an intrinsic sense of structure. With a balance of influences from both disciplines, he is one of the most distinctive performers of his generation, and Lonely Shadows is a testament to his creativity and an important addition to ECM's traditional line of solo piano recordings. He says, "A solo album is a major step in a pianist's artistic development. The proposal by Manfred Eicher and ECM was very special to me. From the very beginning I felt that the album would include complete improvisation. I did not want to prepare anything in advance. There were no forms, melodic sketches, or harmonic layers. I relied entirely on the creative process of playing in the here and now." He said. So far, Dominik Wania has worked with Thomas Stanko, Lee Konitz, Dave Liebman, Marcus Miller, Joey Baron, John Felt, Eddie Henderson, Anders Jormin, Gwen Rae, Gary Thomas, Marilyn Mazur, Erik Marienthal He has performed with many Polish and international jazz musicians.
