The outerwear piece inside the Roughcut Workwear System.
A proper workwear jacket sewing pattern built around structure, movement, durability, and everyday use.
The Yard Jacket is Roughcut’s take on a classic yard jacket shape: slightly cropped, boxy, practical, clean, and designed to be worn hard. Built from canvas, denim, drill or twill, it can become anything from a heavy structured work jacket to a softer everyday layer.
It pairs naturally with the Yard Carpenters, but stands confidently as its own outerwear project.
Classic work jacket proportions. Roughcut construction logic. Built for the workshop, the studio, the yard, and daily rotation.
The Yard Jacket is the jacket-building step in the Workwear System.
This pattern teaches the foundations of proper outerwear construction: jacket assembly, collar construction, zip installation, facings, lining options, welt pockets, chest pocket construction, hem finishing, sleeve setting, and movement-focused pattern details.
It is designed to feel like a real work jacket, not a decorative fashion project. The shape is calm and functional so the fabric, wear, fading, creasing, repairs, and personal details become the character of the garment over time.
Skill Level: 3 / 5
This pattern is ideal if you are comfortable with basic garment construction and want to move into jacket building without being overwhelmed.
The challenge comes from taking your time, following the construction order, and building each section cleanly. It is a proper jacket project, but it is designed to be approachable with the tutorial support included.
You will learn:
The Yard Jacket is designed around durable workwear fabrics that hold shape, take wear, and build character over time.
Inside the pattern resources, you will get fabric recommendations, lining guidance, weight notes, hardware support, and sourcing help so you can choose the right build for your machine and your final garment.
Recommended fabrics include:
Heavier fabrics will create a structured, traditional work jacket. Slightly lighter fabrics will create a softer jacket that is easier to sew on a domestic machine and easier to wear every day.
The Yard Jacket includes build-along tutorial support to help guide you through the main construction stages.
The tutorial resources cover the important areas of the build, including pocket construction, zip installation, lining options, quilting, collar assembly, facings, hems, sleeve construction, and final finishing.
This makes the pattern much easier to approach if you are building a jacket for the first time.

The Yard Jacket is designed to change with use.
The canvas will crease. The collar will soften. The pockets will shape around what you carry. The sleeves will fade where they bend. Repairs, patches, marks and wear will only make it better.
This is the outerwear step in the Workwear System — the project that takes you from sewing garments into building a jacket you can actually live in.
