This is the second ECM album by Vijay Iyer, a pianist who is one of the most popular musicians in the New York jazz scene and a twin of Robert Glasper. This is a work that can only be done after all the formal elements have been completed, and according to Vijay Iyer, "'Break' is actually a time of action. It is a moment of life, a recognition that is the basis for breakdowns, breakbeats, breakdancing, etc." The songs on this album are breakdown versions of Iyer's previous works, including one that premiered at the MoMA suite premiere in New York, and one from Open City, a collaboration with novelist Teju Cole and a large ensemble, that the trio has made more energetic and moving. The trio's productions are more energetic and moving. Hood" is a tribute to Detroit techno pioneer Robert Hood. On "Work," Vijay pays homage to his biggest hero, Thelonious Monk. On "Countdown," the trio revisits classic Coltrane tunes in a rhythmic frame inspired by West African music, and on "Mystery Woman," the beat is inspired by South Indian drumming. The trio's quick movements and quick wit establish a strong musical identity that is unique to the trio. The three explore various driving forces while playing together in what Iyer calls a "reimagining," and there are ample opportunities to enjoy the solos of each of them.
