In the Bible, the story surrounding the birth of Jesus is surprisingly few, and is found only in the first chapter of the New Testament "Gospel according to Luke". In the Gospel of Luke, after Mary was told of her conception by the archangel Gabriel, she visited her relative Elizabeth, who had John the Baptist in her womb, and in response to her blessing, she sang a hymn of praise to God, which begins, "Magnificat aema mea dominum (My soul praises the Lord)". The hymn is composed of 12 verses. It consists of 12 verses in total, and the content conveys the joyful pride of a teenage girl, while also reflecting on the past. Magnificats began to be composed in polyphony mainly in the early 15th century, and the improvised counter-melodies and harmonizations began to be notated from this time onward, and manuscripts of works by Dunstable, Dufay, Binchois, and Buenoit have survived.
