"An unusually attractive and effective form of Phonetic seat work" designed by Nellie York Troidl with words selected from Edward L. Thorndike's "famous list of the 1000 most widely used words in the English language." Nellie Troidl (c.1884-1962) was a graduate of the Iowa State Normal School and taught in the Buffalo and Niagara counties in New York from 1906. She patented several educational assessments and learning aids related to arithmetic and phonetics, and also had an interest in drawing. "She had served as president of the Buffalo Branch, National League of American Pen Women and as president of the state chapter. She also was a member of the Katharine Pratt Horton Chapter of the DAR, the American Assn. of University Women and Flagler Chapter, OES, Niagara Falls and the Royal Neighbors of America, Buffalo, and the Great Lakes China Painting Teachers Organization."
