Description:
Despite his short life of only 50 years, Nikos Skalkottas is considered one of the most important Greek composers of the 20th century. He studied at the Athens Conservatory and then went to Berlin to study with Schoenberg and Weill, and was particularly influenced by Schoenberg, but perhaps due to his mental instability, he concentrated on writing only for about 10 years from the late 1930s until just before his death, during which time he developed his own style incorporating neoclassical compositions. By this time, he had developed his own style, incorporating neoclassical compositions. The four works on this album were all composed during that period, and are unique in their classical appearance and novelty. The National Orchestra of Athens is the orchestra in which Skalkottas was a violinist. Naxos Japan
