VTG 1940s-1950s PA Game Commission State Game Refuge Unlawful Metal Tin Sign

• Auxiliary State Game Refuge: These were historically designated areas in Pennsylvania, often on private lands, that were established to provide a sanctuary for wildlife and aid in their population recovery.
• Hunting is Unlawful: As the sign clearly states, hunting is prohibited within these designated refuge boundaries to ensure the safety and undisturbed presence of wildlife.
• Pennsylvania Game Commission: This state agency is responsible for managing and protecting wildlife in Pennsylvania, including the establishment and oversight of game refuges and lands. 

While the traditional Auxiliary State Game Refuge system for population recovery is largely no longer needed due to successful wildlife management, 

similar signs or designated areas may still exist, and the prohibition on hunting in such areas remains in effect. 

The system of game refuges, like the Auxiliary State Game Refuge was particularly prominent during the first half of the 20th century, 

with many becoming established in the 1900s and 1910s to help bring back declining wildlife populations.

By 1946, the game refuge system was considered to have successfully aided wildlife recovery, 

and many lands were subsequently opened for hunting as the primary refuge system was no longer needed for the initial purpose of population recovery.

Vintage versions of these signs can be found dating from the 1940s and 1950s.

These signs are in GREAT condition, with no scratches, dents, or erosion.
