Chagrin, Francis (1905-1972)
Description:
Francis Chagrin (1905-1972) was a Romanian-born English composer. He studied under Paul Ducasse and Nadia Boulanger at the Conservatoire de France for a period of time, at which time he changed his real name from Alexandre Pauquel to "chagrin," which means deep sorrow or regret. Chagrin's two symphonies are profound and sturdy, similar to the film music he had been working on. It is as if even the listener is swallowed by the waves of sound that reflect Chagrin's anguish. Recorded by the BBC Symphony Orchestra/Martin Brabbins in 2014. (C)RS
