Handel (1685-1759)
Description:
History and mythology were central themes in Baroque music. Operas, as well as many ballets and cantatas, deal with heroes and ancient gods. While the overwhelming majority of these larger-than-life characters are male, several female characters are also popular and featured in musical works. For the most part, female characters are portrayed as either struggling between love and duty or as the norm of chastity. Handel repeatedly featured women as protagonists in oratorios such as "Rodelinda," "Alcina," "Esther," and "Theodora," as well as in his cantatas. In Florence, Rome, Naples, and Venezia, he met some of the most important musicians of his time and competed with the best musicians of his day. Handel was inundated with commissions to compose, and it was during this period in Italy that he composed most of his cantatas. Italian cantatas, with solo voices, bass, and sometimes a few obbligato instruments, were in high demand, in part because they were less expensive to perform. One of Handel's most famous cantatas, "Lucrezia," was composed in Florence in 1706-1707. Handel succeeded in creating an extremely dramatic and nuanced work. The "Following in the Fragile Footsteps (Armida)" was highly praised by J.S. Bach, who even copied it himself. The singer in this concert is "Sabine Devielle," one of the most internationally active young sopranos from France. There is no need to talk about her now, as her singing is pure, straightforward, and overwhelmingly beautiful, and she has an extraordinary expressive power. And "Léa Desendre," who is rapidly gaining a high reputation as a mezzo-soprano of ancient music, participated in William Christie's Academy and was also in Japan in 2016 for the William Christie & Leszar Florissant
