The ancient Greeks believed that olive branches represented abundance and had the power to ward off evil spirits. In Greek mythology, the olive tree was said to have been created by the goddess Athena, who won a contest with Poseidon, the god of the sea, by presenting the city with the olive tree as her gift. The olive branch was also one of the attributes of Eirene, the Greek goddess of peace.

It is interesting to note that Hercules, a prominent figure in Greek mythology, used a truncheon made of wild olive wood. He even transported and planted a wild olive tree in Olympia.
