The Bilsma-derived narrative, Bach's "Suite for Unaccompanied Cello" in its fullness, is written in all six pieces in different tonalities. Some of the keys, such as C major and G major, are easy to play on the cello, while others, such as E-flat major, are technically difficult. Therefore, No. 5 incorporates an irregular tuning, and No. 6 uses a five-string violoncello piccolo. It is thought that Bach went to such lengths because he tried to portray the character of each key and to express all human emotions: joy, sorrow, splendor, simplicity, cheerfulness, melancholy.... Lucia Swartz is a cellist who studied with Anna Bylsma. She has previously released a three-CD set of recordings of Vivaldi and Boccherini (CC-72516), and this Bach recording is the culmination of a 35-year career in which she has played both modern and period cello. She plays Nos. 1-4 on baroque cello, No. 5 on bass de violon, and No. 6 on violoncello piccolo. King International
