Description:
Ingeborg von Starck was born in St. Petersburg, Russia to Swedish parents. Thanks to her parents, who were avid music lovers, she was already known as an excellent performer by the age of 14. She studied piano with the great Franz Liszt. After concert debuts in Leipzig, Dresden, and Paris, in 1861 she became the second wife of Hans Bronsart von Schellendl, one of Liszt's cronies, and was expected to have an even more spectacular career, but in 1867 her husband was appointed general director of the Royal Theater in Hanover, Due to state policy, she was forbidden to perform in public. She later honed her artistic talents by composing, and her operas and more than 50 songs, including "Jäger und Beethli," based on Goethe's play, were premiered in 1873 to great success. Bötely lives with her elderly father deep in the mountains, and Yery, the son of a farmer, is in love with her. Yery's friend, Thomas, is a retired army veteran. The love story of these three people belongs to the Zingspiel tradition of dialogue built in between songs, and the opera is filled with beautiful melodies reminiscent of Weber and Wagner.
