Poot, Marcel (1901-1988)
Description:
Marcel Port is a 20th century Belgian composer. After studying at the Brussels Conservatory, he went on to study at the Antwerpen Conservatory under the influential Belgian composer Paul Gilson. From 1925, as a member of "Les Synthetistes," a group organized by Gilson's pupils, he worked to popularize modern music, and for 15 years he was a critic for the Belgian Music Review, In 1960, he founded the Belgian Federation of Composers, of which he was the first president. He was one of the first to incorporate jazz elements into his own compositions, and his seven symphonies, his masterpieces, are a perfect blend of Ravel and Stravinsky influences and jazz-like melodies, with richly colored sounds and strong rhythms. This complete recording includes performances by four conductors and four orchestras, from the historic 1960 recording to the 1996 recording. It is evident that Port was highly popular even during his lifetime. Naxos Japan
