Widmann, Jorg (1973-)
Description:
Jörg Wittmann (1973-), born in Munich in 1973, is one of the best clarinet players of our time and one of the most sought-after avant-garde composers. He also studied with Henze, Rihm, Heiner Goebbels, and others. His works range from large-scale orchestral works to chamber music and operas, tracing his own tonal roots and expanding his range of expression. He has been a professor of clarinet at the University of Freiburg since 2008 and also teaches composition at the Conservatory. For this album, we have assembled the finest performers to reproduce his works. The violin is played by the virtuoso Christian Tetzlaff, and Daniel Harding shakes the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra. The Island of the Sirens, one of the "Greek Trilogy" premiered by Isabelle Faust and Christoph Poppen, offers lyrical violins and a regular orchestra that supports them with exquisite sound. Antiphon is even more enchanting, a stunning work that surpasses his 2006 "Armonica" (which explores a rainbow of sounds with a variety of instruments). The Violin Concerto was written for Tetzlaff and is a work that challenges the boundless possibilities of the music, in the lineage of Berg and Bartók. Naxos Japan
