Angel Olsen
Description:
Angel Olsen completes her sixth album, following her well-received sisters All Mirrors and Whole New Mess. Big Time," a wise and tender new album that confronts her own queerness, is now available. Co-produced by Jonathan Wilson (Father John Misty, Conor Oberst, and others)Angel Olsen will release her new album, Big Time, on June 3 on Jagjaguwar. The album comes at a rare and fertile time, when both new sorrows and new loves are born and intricately intertwined. The songs were written at a time when Olsen was coming out as queer, experiencing queer love and grief for the first time, and are about the power of new love. In the process of coming to terms with her own queerness and facing the trauma that had prevented her from fully accepting herself, Olsen felt it was time to come out to her parents. After a tearful but relieving conversation, she celebrated with her partner and friends over oysters and wine. Three days later, Olsen's father passed away.Only two weeks later, I received a call that my mother had been taken by ambulance. Mother was placed in hospice and a second funeral was soon after. Three weeks after his mother's funeral, Olsen entered the studio and began recording this wise and gentle new album, Big Time. The album features guest appearances by Tammy Wynette and Kitty Wells, and the complex orchestrations heard on 2019's All Mirrors are present, but unlike All Mirrors, which was full of dramatic changes and twists, Big Time is full of simplicity with Big Time" is a surprise in its simplicity. Recorded and mixed by co-producer Jonathan Wilson at his Topanga, CA studio, Fivestar, with piano, organ, and string arrangements by Drew Erickson. Olsen's band member Emily Elhaj played bass. This summer, Olsen will join Sharon Van Etten, Julien Baker, and Spencer on The Wild Hearts Tour.Angel Olsen is a singer/songwriter from St. Louis, MO, who began performing in local coffee shops in her late teens, and was discovered by Emmett Kelly (Bonnie "Prince" Billy, The Cairo Gang), debuting in 2011 with the EP Strange Cacti. After his first album, 2012's Half Way Home, he moved to Jagjaguwar and released his second album, 2014's Burn Your Fire For No Witness. 2016's third album My Woman" received critical acclaim, including an 8.9 on Pitchfork; their fourth album, "AllMirrors," was released in 2019, followed by "Whole New Mess," the sister album to "All Mirrors," in 2020.
