The Woodward 8290-185 is a high-performance Electromagnetic Speed Sensor (also known as a Magnetic Pickup Unit or MPU) designed for use in engine control systems. It is an essential component for sensing the speed of a prime mover, such as a gas or diesel engine, by detecting the passage of gear teeth on a flywheel. This passive sensor converts mechanical motion into an electrical frequency, providing accurate engine speed data for applications like fuel delivery and speed regulation.
The 8290-185 is robustly constructed with a stainless steel body and offers exceptional resistance to vibration, corrosion, and harsh environmental conditions, making it ideal for mounting directly on engine bell housings. Unlike electronic modules, this sensor requires no external power supply, making it simple to install and maintain.
Passive Operation:
The sensor requires no external power source; it generates its own AC voltage as gear teeth pass the magnetic field.
High Output:
Designed to deliver a strong signal even at low cranking speeds, ensuring reliable performance during engine start-up.
Rugged Construction:
Encapsulated in stainless steel to withstand vibration, oil, fuel, and moisture, making it ideal for industrial engine applications.
Corrosion Resistance:
Features a stainless steel shell that resists corrosion, ensuring long-lasting durability in harsh operating environments.
Precision Sensing:
Converts mechanical motion into an electrical signal, which is directly proportional to the engine speed (RPM).

Proper installation of the 8290-185 is crucial for accurate and reliable operation. Follow these steps to ensure correct setup:
Find the High Point:
Rotate the engine until a gear tooth is centered in the sensor hole.
Thread In:
Screw the MPU in by hand until the sensor tip gently touches the gear tooth.
Back Off:
Back the MPU out (counter-clockwise) by 1/2 to 3/4 of a turn. This creates a standard air gap of 0.025" to 0.035" (0.64mm to 0.89mm).
Lock Down:
Secure the MPU with the provided locknut to prevent any movement.
Durability:
Designed for harsh environments, this sensor is corrosion-resistant and vibration-proof, ensuring long-lasting operation in demanding industrial settings.
No External Power Required:
With passive operation, the 8290-185 generates its own voltage, simplifying installation and reducing the need for additional power supplies.
Reliable Engine Speed Sensing:
Provides accurate RPM readings to ensure precise engine control and efficient fuel management.
Versatile Compatibility:
Works seamlessly with Woodward Governors (e.g., 2301A or Peak 150) or other electronic control units (ECUs) for speed regulation.
