Bach (1685-1750)
Description:
The cello in the unaccompanied violin cycle! Mario Brunello is an Italian master cellist who studied under master Antonio Janigro, won the International Tchaikovsky Competition, and began his career as a contemporary cellist. In recent years, he has deepened his knowledge of historical techniques and ancient musical instruments, and has also made his presence felt as a performer of ancient instruments with the Venice Baroque Orchestra (under the direction of Giuliano Carmignola) and the Mozart Orchestra (under the direction of Claudio Abbado). He also recorded Bach's "Suite for Unaccompanied Cello" in 2010, but he has always been curious about the existence of "another Bach unaccompanied," the six pieces for violin. Following recent research by Bach scholars, Brunello confronted this treasure of violin works with a small Amati model cello, which is thought to be the equivalent of the tenor violin (four strings, one octave lower in tuning, like the regular violin) that existed in the 18th century. As a result, he felt that he had only understood half of Bach, and he was so absorbed in the work that he recorded the entire work. Alessandro Baricco, the author of "The Pianist on the Sea," was so surprised by the effect of this performance that he commented on it in his commentary. This recording is a major step forward in understanding the work of "Sonatas and Partitas for Solo Violin" - an acoustic world that Brunello approaches with a recording that shows his attention to the instruments, bows, strings, as well as the playing table.
