Latin name - Sandoricum koetjape
A mature Santol Tree’s stately appearance and staggering growth potential (up to 150’ high!) make for a stupendous addition to your backyard or orchard. The hand-sized ribbed leaves contrast with a bounty of creamy-orange fruits and the best part is that your neighbor definitely does not have it.
Also called sentul or setun, the more common name “Cotton Fruit” provides a more descriptive idea of what to expect. The skin of the fruit is slightly fuzzy like a peach. The flesh itself also has peachy notes, alongside mild apple flavor. The texture of santol is juicy and soft with cotton-y texture near the seeds.
In its native region of Malesia and New Guinea, pulp is commonly eaten raw or candied or made into marmalade. Unripe fruits are used as a souring agent; the grated rind is cooked with pork.
Santol trees are also prized for their quality timber and functionality as a shade or climbing tree. The leaves and bark are used medicinally as a poultice. The seeds are noted to have insecticidal properties (don’t eat them!).
