Vittorio Rieti was born in Egypt, the third generation of Italian immigrants, and after serving as a cadet in World War I, he immigrated to Italy at age 19. During this period, he composed two ballets, "Barabau" and "Le bal," for Balanchine, whom he met. In 1944, he became a naturalized U.S. citizen, teaching at the Peabody Conservatory in Baltimore and the School of Music in Chicago, while spending half the year in Europe, where he composed numerous works in all genres, including orchestral, chamber, and film music. He composed numerous orchestral, chamber, and film works in all genres. His works were influenced by Debussy, Ravel, Stravinsky, and Prokofiev, and his orchestral works in particular were performed and highly acclaimed by renowned conductors such as Toscanini, Stokowski, and Kubelik. Piano works also play an important role in Rieti's oeuvre, and this first volume in the series features eight works, including world premiere recordings of his masterpieces such as the "2nd Street Waltz" and the "12 Preludes". The works have a light and unconstrained expression reminiscent of Poulenc. The works are performed by Giorgio Koukl, who was born in the Czech Republic in 1953 and is also an active composer. The duo is performed by Italian-born Virginia Rossetti, and they play well together. Naxos Japan
